This vintage Spode Copeland green and tan relief ceramic pitcher presents a sturdy, softly tapered silhouette, with a broad cylindrical body that narrows gently toward the base and a pinched pouring lip. Crafted from ceramic in the manner of English jasperware, the body is covered in a deep, glossy forest-green ground that makes the white sprigged relief decoration stand out in crisp contrast. A continuous frieze of classical figures wraps the lower body: robed maidens in flowing drapery tend a smoking altar on a fluted pedestal, one carrying a lidded urn and another holding a garland, with a small ewer and acanthus sprigs nestled between them. Above, a band of overlapping white acanthus leaves circles the shoulder, framed by narrow tan borders of tiny beaded molding. The unglazed buff-tan base and angular strap handle are finely tooled with ridged, basketweave, and radiating-flute patterns, offering a warm, sandy counterpoint to the green. The finish retains a gentle, well-preserved patina, and the relief remains sharp and crisp. Stately, scholarly, and quietly theatrical, the pitcher reflects the enduring Neoclassical taste of the Victorian table.
Place this pitcher on a sideboard, mantel, bookshelf, or dining table, or use it as a vase for garden stems, branches, or dried grasses. It complements Victorian, Traditional, Neoclassical, English Country, and Grandmillennial interiors. To care for it, hand wash gently with mild soap and warm water, avoid soaking, dishwashers, and sudden temperature changes, and dry thoroughly to protect the glaze and applied relief. The pitcher measures 5.25 inches (133 mm) wide, 4 inches (102 mm) deep, and 6.25 inches (159 mm) high. Condition is very good, with a well-preserved original finish, minor surface wear, slight scuffs on the base, and no visible chips or cracks. Add this distinguished piece to your collection today.
