A distinguished pair of hand-colored English aquatint engravings depicting two prominent figures in the coronation of King George IV, held at Westminster Abbey on 19 July 1821. Published under the direction of Sir George Nayler, these historical portraits document the elaborate ceremonial dress and pageantry of the British royal court.
The first portrays Robert Stewart, Marquess of Londonderry, standing in the robes and collar of the Order of the Garter, holding his hat in one hand. The second depicts Lord Charles Bentinck, Treasurer of the King's Household, in ceremonial dress, bearing the crimson bag containing the coronation medals.
The original inscriptions identify the sitters, artists, and occasion. The Londonderry portrait was engraved by William Bond and William Bennett after James Stephanoff, while the Bentinck portrait was engraved by K. Scriven after Stephanoff. Both are examples of the hand-colored aquatint and stipple techniques used to capture the richness of early nineteenth-century ceremonial portraiture. Related impressions are held in the collection of the British Museum.
