The square, cushion-form top is sculpted to resemble softly upholstered fabric, complete with gently gathered corners, twisted-rope trim, and pendant tassels. Raised scrolling ornament decorates the four sides, while the boldly modeled feet incorporate classical Greek key motifs.

Particularly charming is the elaborate trompe-l’œil finish, intended to replicate centuries-old gilded wood with areas of worn gold leaf revealing the rich reddish gesso beneath. The deliberately distressed surface lends the piece the romantic appearance of an antique Italian furnishing, complete with the visual depth and character of timeworn gilding.

The combination of sculptural plasterwork, classical ornament, and illusionistic painting gives this unusual tabouret a distinctly theatrical quality.

Measuring 14.5 inches square and 16 inches high, this versatile piece can serve as a decorative stool, plant stand, or occasional side table. Equally charming beside a fireplace, tucked beneath a console, or incorporated into a thoughtfully collected interior.
