Each chair features the distinctive X-form folding construction associated with the historic Savonarola chair. The lower frames are fashioned from dark patinated wrought iron with handsome rope-twist detailing. Above, elaborate cast bronze elements provide a dramatic contrast. Tall turned bronze standards rise at each corner and terminate in flattened circular finials, while horizontal arm supports feature a succession of turned and knobbed details. Additional bronze fittings and feet punctuate the darker iron framework and give the chairs their particularly decorative appearance. Rich burgundy velvet seats soften the strong metal construction and introduce a note of color. The Savonarola chair takes its inspiration from folding X-frame seating forms with roots dating back to antiquity, and is associated with Renaissance Italy. This unusual pair is distinctive for its mixed-metal construction of twisted wrought iron and turned cast bronze.
These Savonarola chairs are as much sculptural objects as functional pieces of furniture, making them effective in today's collected interiors. Place the pair opposite a sofa or on either side of a fireplace for dramatic occasional seating. They would be exceptional flanking a Spanish console, Renaissance chest, or large doorway in an entry hall. The pair naturally complements Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Renaissance Revival, Old World and European interiors, but their sculptural quality makes them equally compelling in a contemporary setting.
