A striking antique Imperial Russian silver flask or bottle, dating to the final years of Imperial Russia, circa 1908–1917.
The approximately 9-inch-tall vessel features an elongated neck rising from a rounded body, with its original-style fitted stopper, decorative chain and elaborate chained ornamentation. Its substantial sculptural form and beautifully aged silver surface give the piece an exceptional decorative presence.
Of particular importance is the group of Imperial Russian hallmarks impressed into the silver.
The principal hallmark is a right-facing Kokoshnik mark, depicting the profile of a woman wearing the traditional Russian kokoshnik headdress and identifying the piece with the later Imperial Russian hallmarking period.
The Kokoshnik is accompanied by the number 3, indicating .800 silver, according to the hallmark research used in identifying the piece.
A small character on the opposite side of the Kokoshnik represents the regional assay office. Because of the minute size and wear of the punch, the character cannot presently be distinguished with sufficient certainty to determine whether the assay office was Moscow, St. Petersburg, Warsaw, or Kiev.
A separate oval punch bears Cyrillic initials identifying the Russian silversmith or workshop responsible for producing the piece. The maker has not yet been conclusively attributed.
A further small circular punch represents an auxiliary or inspection/garniture mark.
An unusual and highly collectible surviving example of late Imperial Russian silver, equally compelling as a historic decorative object, piece of antique barware, or addition to a collection of Russian decorative arts.
