The upper section features fine diamond and fan-cut decoration, framed by stepped and arched cuts which create a striking transition around the centre of the vessel. The lower section is comparatively restrained, allowing the clarity and weight of the glass to remain prominent. When displayed in natural or artificial light, the extensive cutting produces considerable sparkle, with light reflecting and refracting across the faceted surface. The overall design has a distinctive late Victorian character, balancing decorative complexity with an elegant, practical form. The glass has a large, neatly polished pontil to the underside, consistent with hand-blown manufacture. The quality and complexity of the cutting are characteristic of the Stourbridge glassmaking tradition, and the glass is attributed to Stevens & Williams of Stourbridge. The silver mount is by Horace Woodward & Co., with the maker's marks clearly present to the collar and hinged cover. The substantial silverwork includes a plain collar, hinged lid and beautifully shaped scroll handle, providing a restrained contrast to the elaborate glass body. This is an especially attractive example of Victorian tableware, suitable for a fine dining setting but equally impressive displayed as a decorative piece. Its combination of English sterling silver, important Stourbridge glassmaking and late Victorian craftsmanship makes it an appealing addition to a collection of antique silver or British art glass. An elegant heirloom piece and an excellent choice for a collector, wedding gift or special occasion.
