Exhibiting exceptional 18th-century scale and sculptural presence, this heavy solid cast brass mortar and pestle features classic flared rims, hand-chiseled reeded bandings, and dual stylized C-scroll handles. Historically associated with 18th to early 19th century European apothecary workshops and traditional Jewish ceremonial households, where heavy brass vessels were prized for durability during ritual apothecary and culinary preparations. The set offers a commanding aesthetic for rustic, traditional, or collector-grade Judaica interiors.
Design Significance & Historical Context
Dating from the late 18th to early 19th century (c. 1780–1820), this 15-pound solid brass mortar and pestle is an exceptional example of early European metalwork. Featuring hand-brazed C-scroll handles, lathe-turned accent banding, and direct provenance from J. Greenstein & Co., its grand scale and untouched warm patina establish it as a museum-grade sculptural piece.
Curator's Note
An impressive statement for high-end interior styling. Its massive weight, historical texture, and deep brass luster bring architectural grounding to a hearth mantel, library shelf, or rustic kitchen island.
