A striped balloon carries its passenger above a boat-shaped gondola at the center of this decorative platter. Ochre yellow, soft blue and leafy green ornament give the piece a playful palette, framed by a scalloped white rim.
The scene recalls a moment when flight captured Europe’s imagination. Following the first balloon ascents of 1783, “balloonomania” brought these remarkable flying machines into fashion and home decoration. French potters, including makers in Nevers, painted balloon scenes on ceramics to celebrate the excitement of discovery.
With its whimsical subject and flowing border, this platter echoes that decorative tradition—a charming accent for a kitchen shelf or collection of painted ceramics.
Size: Approximately 14¾″ long × 10½″ wide.
