A handsome example of late 18th-century New England craftsmanship, this Chippendale slant front desk embodies the practical elegance that made these desks an essential furnishing in early American homes. Built during the Federal transition from the Colonial era, it features the classic fall-front writing surface above a bank of drawers, all supported by boldly carved ogee bracket feet. The rich cherry has developed a deep, warm patina over more than two centuries, giving the piece the character and presence that collectors appreciate.
Crafted of solid cherry with traditional dovetailed drawer construction, the desk retains an attractive set of period-style brass batwing pulls and matching escutcheons that complement its understated design. The slant front opens to reveal a fitted writing interior with an arrangement of small drawers and document compartments, providing both beauty and functionality. Its clean proportions and honest craftsmanship make it equally at home in a period setting or as a distinctive accent piece in a modern interior.
The desk is in nice antique condition, consistent with age and normal use. It displays the expected wear, surface marks, and small imperfections accumulated over more than 200 years that contribute to its authentic character. There are old repairs to the front bracket feet where they join the case, which have been well executed and provide good structural integrity while preserving the desk’s historic character. The interior remains fully functional for writing or storage, making this a wonderful piece that is as practical today as it was when it was first crafted. 43h x 44w x 20d
