On offer is an Adénlá (or simply an Adé), which is the traditional Yoruba language term for a Yoruba Beaded King's Crown. It originates from southwestern Nigeria, the cultural region of the Yoruba people. It was created as the ultimate sacred regalia and legal symbol of state authority for a Yoruba King, known as an Oba. It was worn strictly during major state occasions, coronations, festivals and public religious ceremonies where the King acted as a divine mediator between the physical world and the ancestral spirit realm.
SYMBOLISM:
• The Birds: The birds represent Okin, the royal bird. They symbolize the mystical, watchful spiritual powers of older women and ancestral mothers (known as awon iya wa or "Our Mothers"), whose support and council protect and sustain the King's divine right to rule.
• The Frontal Faces: The large, stylized faces represent Oduduwa, the legendary mythic founder and first ancestor king of all Yoruba kingdoms. They link the current king to his ancestral lineage.
• The Conical Shape: The tall, cone-shaped body acts as a container for the ori inu (the inner spirit/head) of the king. It traditionally held a hidden packet of powerful sacred medicine (oogun ase) at the peak to boost the ruler's ritual potency.
CREATION: It was crafted by a specialized guild of master bead-embroidery artisans (traditionally including families like the Adeshina family). They are commissioned exclusively by or for the royalty. Traditionally, an Adénlá features long strands of beads hanging down from the lower rim to form a veil (iboju). This veil depersonalizes the individual man, turning him into an abstract icon of divine power, while shielding onlookers from the blinding radiance of the ruler's gaze. The veil on this offered piece is missing, showing just the loops where they once connected.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
