The maker, material and period are confirmed by the hallmarked attribution. The frame displays the refined craftsmanship associated with quality English silverwork at the close of the 19th century. Its silver frontage provides a sophisticated setting for a treasured photograph or portrait, while the restrained design allows the quality and natural lustre of the precious metal to remain the principal decorative feature. The beautifully proportioned rectangular form has the understated elegance characteristic of Victorian silver photograph frames. Over a century of age has given the silver an attractive period character, making the piece equally appealing as a functional frame and as a collectible example of English decorative silver. Samuel Jacob was active as a London silversmith during this period, and the clear 1899 dating places this example firmly within the final years of Queen Victoria's reign.
