The piece is beautifully hand-painted with polychrome floral sprays, scrolling foliage and delicate insect motifs in a vibrant palette of blue, yellow, green and iron red, characteristic of traditional Rouen-style faience decoration. The symmetrical composition incorporates two inkwells, each surmounted by an elegant flame-shaped finial, positioned on either side of a central hinged compartment. Behind them rises an architectural arched back panel richly decorated with flowers and scrolling botanical motifs, creating an attractive and distinctly French silhouette. Raised upon small shaped feet, the inkwell combines practical desk functionality with the decorative exuberance associated with French faience. The lively hand-painted decoration and subtle variations in execution give the piece considerable individual character. Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, this attractive desk accessory reflects the enduring popularity of historic Rouen ceramic traditions and would make an elegant addition to a collection of French ceramics, antique writing accessories or decorative objects. Presented in good antique condition with minor surface and age-related wear consistent with its period and use. from a private collection. See less
