Jupiter is presented in a commanding classical pose, raising a thunderbolt above his head while the imposing eagle stands at his feet. The combination of the thunderbolt and eagle, both longstanding symbols of Jupiter's divine authority, gives the composition a particularly dramatic and sculptural presence. Finely modelled and hand-painted, the figure is richly decorated with vibrant polychrome enamels and delicate gilt highlights. Jupiter wears elaborate floral-decorated robes complemented by flowing blue drapery, while his crowned head, expressive facial features and carefully modelled anatomy demonstrate the accomplished craftsmanship associated with Derby porcelain. The accompanying eagle is particularly well rendered, its outstretched form adding movement and visual balance to the composition while reinforcing the mythological identity of the subject. The underside bears the incised model number No. 117, identifying the design within Derby's extensive repertoire of classical and mythological porcelain figures. Dating to the early 20th century, this impressive figure reflects the enduring popularity of 18th-century-inspired Derby porcelain and the classical subjects that became synonymous with the English factory's decorative production. A striking example of English porcelain combining classical mythology, elaborate hand-painted decoration and fine sculptural modelling. Particularly appealing to collectors of Derby porcelain, mythological figures and traditional English decorative arts. See less
