The piece belongs to a series of solid silver commemorative works produced for the Churchill Centenary. The circular dish is crafted from hallmarked sterling silver and centred by a relief portrait of Churchill, creating a strong sculptural focal point against the broad polished surface. The restrained composition gives the piece an elegant character while allowing the portrait and precious metal craftsmanship to remain the principal features. John Pinches was renowned for producing finely executed commemorative silver, medals and limited-edition objects marking important British historical and royal occasions. Comparable Churchill Centenary pieces by the firm are recorded as London 1974 sterling silver works. The combination of substantial solid silver construction, historical subject matter and accomplished British craftsmanship makes this an attractive object for collectors of 20th-century silver, Churchilliana and British commemorative works of art.
