Standing an impressive 118 cm high, the chair has a strong sculptural presence. The towering back is richly worked with carved foliate and scrolling ornament, framed by prominent barley-twist supports that lend the piece a distinctly Jacobean and Renaissance Revival character. The elaborate crest is particularly striking, incorporating carved cherub figures surrounding a central flowerhead, creating an almost ecclesiastical quality. The combination of dark aged oak, intricate carving and dramatic proportions makes this an atmospheric statement piece for a country house, entrance hall, library or historic interior. The chair retains its old upholstery, which is now worn and fragile but contributes considerably to its untouched antique appearance. Traditional construction methods remain evident beneath the seat, including old upholstery tacks and nails. The oak has developed a rich, naturally aged surface and patina. There is evidence of historic inactive woodworm, an old repair to one leg and some movement within the structure, particularly around the front and leg area. Accordingly, the chair is presently best considered a decorative or display piece unless structurally reinforced before regular seating use. A wonderfully characterful piece of antique furniture with Gothic, Jacobean and Renaissance Revival influences and exceptional visual presence.
