The female sitter is rendered through dramatically simplified and fragmented forms, with brilliant passages of green, yellow, orange, violet and blue. A vivid red-orange beret crowns the composition, while the asymmetrical treatment of the face and strongly outlined features create the powerful graphic quality for which Picasso's portraits of this period are renowned. The work is presented within an exceptionally elaborate Rococo-inspired gilt gallery frame, featuring deep moulded relief, scrolling acanthus leaves, floral ornamentation and substantial decorative corner elements.
