The maiden is modelled in a graceful standing pose carrying two amphora-form water vessels, one balanced elegantly upon her head and another held at her side. Her flowing classical robes are richly embellished with gilt decoration, creating a striking contrast with the softly finished bisque porcelain of the figure. The amphorae are decorated with traditional Greek key or meander motifs, further emphasising the sculpture's inspiration from classical antiquity. Particular attention has been given to the flowing folds of the drapery, the poised stance and the delicately modelled facial features. Raised upon a circular base, the figure has an elegant vertical composition and impressive sculptural presence. The combination of bisque and glazed porcelain with extensive gilding is characteristic of the highly decorative Continental European porcelain produced around the turn of the 20th century. Likely produced in Continental Europe, possibly Germany or Austria, circa 1900, the figure embodies the Classical Revival aesthetic that remained fashionable during the transition from the Victorian period into the Art Nouveau era. Presented in very good antique condition, with light age-related wear consistent with careful display. A refined and highly decorative porcelain sculpture, ideal for a mantelpiece, console table or display cabinet, and an attractive addition to a collection of European porcelain or Neoclassical decorative arts.
