This antique chest from France is surmounted by what is likely its original marble top, has rounded front corners that project softly outward, and subtle stepped projections at each back side. The case displays classic Neoclassical symmetry, with three full-sized, graduated drawers framed by projecting rounded front corner stiles with vertical fluting. Brass detailing is used throughout with tasteful restraint. Narrow brass string inlay outlines each drawer front, creating crisp geometric borders that accentuate the commode's sophisticated design. Additional brass molding encircles the case at the junction of the upper and lower drawer sections, while brass collars highlight the columnar corner posts. The drawers retain their original or period brass rectangular bail pulls and brass keyhole escutcheon at center. The chest stands on tapered conical legs, each accented with brass rings at the tops and terminating in brass-capped feet. The slender proportions of the legs lighten the overall appearance of the commode and provide a graceful visual transition from the substantial case to the floor. The marble itself is particularly attractive, displaying a rich palette of warm salmon pink, terracotta, rose, dusty coral, cream, ivory, and soft gray.
