A striking and highly decorative french art deco five-light chandelier dating to circa 1930, combining gleaming chrome-plated metal, ribbed bakelite detailing and original hand-moulded opaline glass shades. The chandelier is arranged in a dramatic suspended wagon-wheel configuration, with five evenly spaced arms creating a strong, symmetrical architectural silhouette. Ribbed bakelite pillars provide a particularly distinctive period detail, contrasting beautifully against the streamlined chrome-plated framework. Each of the five lights is fitted with a stepped dome-form shade in hand-moulded white opaline glass. Characteristic of 1930s modernist lighting, the softly translucent glass diffuses the light evenly and creates a warm atmospheric glow when illuminated. The chandelier retains its substantial chrome ceiling plate, distinctive double-design suspension chain and period brass b22 bayonet bulb holders. The combination of chrome, bakelite and opaline glass encapsulates the sophisticated machine-age aesthetic of european art deco design.
