The plate is centred by a dynamically rendered dragon, one of the most important and recognisable motifs in Chinese decorative arts. Traditionally associated with imperial authority, strength and auspicious power, the dragon creates a particularly dramatic focal point against the porcelain ground. Finely hand-painted decoration and the compact circular form give the piece considerable visual impact despite its relatively modest 18 cm diameter. The vivid red palette makes it particularly attractive for display, whether individually or incorporated into a collection of Qing dynasty porcelain and Asian works of art. Dating to approximately 1850–1899, the plate retains the authentic character and surface variation expected from a Chinese porcelain object of this age. The plate displays general age-related wear and has a hairline consistent with its considerable age. It has not been restored. An unusual and highly decorative example of late Qing dynasty porcelain, particularly appealing for its distinctive dragon decoration and rich red colouring.
