Beautifully hand-painted in the traditional famille rose palette, the vase displays the vibrant enamel colours and intricate decorative character associated with Chinese porcelain of the period. Its substantial scale provides an expansive surface for the detailed decoration and gives the piece considerable presence. The generously proportioned form and rich polychrome decoration make this a particularly striking decorative object. The combination of delicate painted detail, warm colour and substantial scale allows the vase to function equally well as a standalone statement piece or as part of a collection of Chinese porcelain and Asian works of art. Dating to circa 1850–1899, the vase is an antique original from the Qing dynasty and represents an attractive example of late 19th-century Chinese decorative porcelain. The vase displays historic staple repairs to approximately half of the lower body, an interesting traditional method of repairing valuable ceramics before the widespread adoption of modern restoration techniques. The remainder is in good antique condition, with age-related character consistent with its considerable age. A substantial and highly decorative Qing dynasty vase, notable for its impressive scale, colourful famille rose decoration and authentic historic character.
