The two dogs are individually modelled in complementary poses, one standing attentively with its head raised, while its companion is distinguished by its long pendant ears and alert hunting stance. Together they form a particularly commanding and beautifully balanced pair. Produced in solid cast iron by Elizabeth & Stevens, the sculptures have extraordinary weight and presence, with each hound weighing approximately 180 kg. Fine modelling throughout captures the musculature, facial features, coat and characteristic anatomy of traditional sporting dogs. The naturally weathered rust-coloured patina gives the iron a wonderfully established appearance reminiscent of 19th-century estate and country-house garden sculpture. Continued exterior exposure will allow the surface to develop further character naturally over time. These substantial sculptures would be particularly impressive positioned either side of an estate entrance, doorway, driveway, garden staircase or terrace, while their sporting subject makes them equally appropriate for a country house, hunting lodge or equestrian property.
