Complete with its original cut-glass inkwells and surmounted by a characterful bronze lion dog figure, the piece combines practical Victorian desk furniture with considerable sculptural and decorative appeal. ㅤ The rectangular olive wood stand displays the naturally rich figuring and warm tonal variation characteristic of the timber. Its beautifully aged surface has developed an attractive patina that complements the contrasting bronze and brass fittings. ㅤ A pair of original cut-glass inkwells occupies the rear section of the stand, each fitted with a hinged brass-mounted lid. The faceted glass catches and reflects the light beautifully, while the warm brass mounts harmonise particularly well with the olive wood construction. ㅤ Between the inkwells is a hinged lidded compartment designed for storing wax seals, quills or other small writing accessories. This practical concealed storage demonstrates the thoughtful construction associated with sophisticated Victorian desk accessories. ㅤ The composition is surmounted by a finely modelled bronze lion dog, providing a distinctive sculptural focal point. The small bronze figure contrasts beautifully against the polished timber and gives the stand considerable character when viewed from across a desk. ㅤ A domed pen rest completes the arrangement, allowing writing instruments to be positioned conveniently alongside the inkwells and accessory compartment. ㅤ Weighing approximately 1.78 kg, the stand has a pleasing substance and remains remarkably complete. It is in very good antique condition with no significant damage or repairs, while the original glass inkwells remain free from chips apart from a couple of very minor nibbles to their bases. ㅤ An unusual and highly decorative Victorian desk accessory, particularly appealing for a traditional study, library or collection of antique writing instruments and decorative bronzes.
