An exceptional, compact 19th-century English Victorian dual-compartment tea caddy crafted from highly figured burl walnut. The exterior features intricate, multi-colored geometric Tunbridge Ware micro-mosaic banding that beautifully frames the lid and front facade. The inner corners of the lid feature stylized "H" parquetry accents, a signature touch of Victorian craftsmanship. The hinged lid opens to reveal two independent mahogany-lidded compartments with turned wood finial knobs, historically used to separate black and green teas. The box features a flush-mounted shield brass escutcheon, original inset brass quadrant stop-hinges, and an ebonized interior rim. Measuring just 8 inches wide, this domestic parlor-sized caddy offers wonderful proportions for display on modern mantels, bookshelves, or sideboards. The exterior burl walnut veneer and geometric Tunbridge Ware inlay are in excellent antique condition with a beautiful original patina and no missing tiles. The original brass stop-hinges work smoothly, allowing the lid to rest open perfectly at 90 degrees. Includes a working barrel key dressed with a burgundy silk tassel. The interior wooden canister lids are intact with original turned knobs. The original metal foil lining has been cleanly removed from the interior wells over time. The underside retains its original faded green baize fabric, showing appropriate wear and fraying consistent with age and careful use. See less
