The iconic "Willow" Collection designed by David Allen for McGuire Furniture, circa 1970s. This substantial lounge showcases McGuire's renowned craftsmanship, featuring hand-wrapped sculptural rattan and bamboo frames with the collection's distinctive open latticework sides and woven bases. (Additionally, we will be listing the extra sofa as well as the chair and table.
The original striped upholstered cushions in warm earth tones complement the natural rattan finish and lend an effortless California coastal aesthetic that remains as relevant today as when the collection was introduced. The sofa retain the original McGuire metal tags, per images. Some original catalog images from McGuire look books included.
The Willow Collection exemplifies the relaxed sophistication that established McGuire as one of America's most influential luxury furniture makers. We have included some generated images to provide some context to your imagination on styling this set in your space.
Retaining its original character with attractive age and patina consistent with vintage use. This set presents a very rare opportunity to acquire a large and increasingly difficult-to-find McGuire Willow Collection ensemble. This set is part of a large estate we will be listing owned by a prominent Houston art dealer and antiques collector. This set is in unusually good condition. The cushions need to be recovered, but otherwise it is in a lovely state.
John and Elinor McGuire founded their San Francisco furniture company in 1948. They became celebrated for transforming natural materials into sophisticated furniture suitable for elegant interiors.
A 1967 issue of Interiors magazine discusses McGuire's imported Italian Willow furniture, describing it as a modern interpretation of traditional wicker furniture.
It specifically credits architect and designer Davis Allen of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill with designing a square chair and sofa for the collection. Other designs were attributed to Elinor McGuire. The collection was also selected for the prestigious Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in Hawaii.
