The table incorporates five useful drawers arranged across the front, comprising two drawers to either side of a larger central drawer. This balanced configuration provides excellent storage for stationery, documents and writing accessories while maintaining an elegant and symmetrical façade. Each drawer retains its original brass handles, providing an attractive period detail and contrasting beautifully with the deep, warm tones of the mahogany. The generously proportioned writing surface is inset with green leather, creating a comfortable and practical area for writing or working while introducing a classic colour contrast against the surrounding mahogany. Beneath the drawers, the shaped and carved frieze adds further decorative interest and gives the table a more sophisticated architectural character. The writing table is raised upon four elegant cabriole legs with beautifully carved knees. These graceful supports introduce a strong Georgian and Chippendale influence to the design while giving the table a refined and well-balanced silhouette. Particularly appealing is the mahogany itself, displaying pronounced natural grain, attractive figuring and a rich, warm colour throughout. An established patina further enhances the depth and character of the timber. At 121 cm wide, the table provides a substantial working surface without the imposing proportions of a conventional pedestal desk. Its 53 cm depth also makes it particularly practical for interiors where space is limited. The generous 57.5 cm knee clearance allows comfortable seating beneath the desk, making this a highly functional piece for regular use as well as an attractive decorative furnishing. Very well constructed and presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its early 20th-century origin. A highly desirable and versatile example of English cabinetmaking, ideally suited to a study, library, drawing room, bedroom or sophisticated home office.
