The upper section incorporates two useful drawers retaining their original handles and fittings, positioned above a pair of cupboard doors opening to reveal a single internal shelf. The doors are enhanced by traditional gathered fabric panels, giving the piece an unusual and decorative character. Fine reeded detailing is used throughout the design and is complemented by contrasting satinwood and ebony stringing together with mahogany crossbanding. These carefully executed decorative elements provide definition to the restrained Regency-inspired form while highlighting the quality of the cabinetmaking. The cupboard retains its original brass handles, fittings and key and is raised elegantly on turned legs. Particularly attractive is the mahogany itself, displaying a rich, warm colour with pronounced natural grain and considerable depth. Its relatively shallow depth and practical proportions make this an especially versatile piece, offering useful storage without dominating a room. It would work beautifully as a side cabinet, hall cupboard, drawing-room cabinet or decorative storage piece within both traditional and contemporary interiors. A handsome and highly usable example of 19th century English furniture, presented in good condition and ready for use.
