A refined antique chinese export preserve jar and cover dating to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1850–1899. Crafted in cut glass and embellished with delicate hand engraving, the piece combines practical form with the intricate decorative craftsmanship associated with chinese export wares of the qing period. Impressed with character marks: ( the mark is xian shi gong si 先施公司 which is the mandarin name for the sincere company department store in shanghai, canton and hong kong. The artisan workshop mark is shang 尚 which was a hong kong mark. It's a butter dish by the way; it's a well-known item from sincere. ) the vessel features a beautifully cut glass body with hand-engraved decoration worked across the surface. The interplay between polished and cut areas gives the glass an attractive brilliance, while the engraved detailing introduces a more delicate decorative quality. Complete with its fitted cover, the jar has an elegant and balanced silhouette. Originally conceived as a preserve or serving vessel, it can now be appreciated as a decorative object in its own right, particularly suited to a collection of chinese export glass, qing dynasty decorative arts or 19th-century tableware. The combination of transparent glass, intricate cutting and engraved workmanship gives the piece a sophisticated appearance that works equally well within traditional and contemporary interiors. Dating to the late qing dynasty, this is an unusual example of chinese export decorative glass and an attractive alternative to the porcelain and enamel wares more commonly associated with chinese export production. The documented period is 1850–1899 and the country of origin is china.
