The hand-hammered copper charger is extensively engraved in the traditional qalamzani manner, with areas of contrasting silvery-toned decoration against a dark, naturally aged surface. At the centre is an elaborate courtly musical gathering, or bazm, arranged beneath a three-bay pointed architectural arcade. Four figures populate the scene, including musicians playing a harp, trumpet and stringed instrument, gathered around an elevated bearded figure. Their finely delineated robes, facial features and instruments are surrounded by architectural and botanical details, creating a densely worked composition characteristic of Persian decorative metalwork. The broad scalloped border is particularly intricate, filled with scrolling foliage, flowers, birds and small animals. Fine engraved lines and punched textures combine with traces of reddish copper, silvery-grey metal and naturally darkened patination to give the surface considerable depth and character. A striking example of 19th-century Persian decorative metalwork, the charger has substantial scale and would make an impressive wall-mounted decorative piece. Presented in antique condition, with extensive surface wear, oxidation, patination, rubbing and areas of loss consistent with its age. There are areas of heavier wear and deterioration to the decoration, particularly around the border, as visible in the photographs. The rear hanging fitting is loose and shows corrosion, and should be secured before the charger is hung. See less
