This … Read more A magnificent antique English silver-mounted claret jug, combining an intricately engraved glass body with highly decorative solid silver mounts. This impressive piece features a beautifully proportioned baluster-shaped glass body, extensively engraved with delicate floral sprays, foliage, bows and swags. The clear glass provides an elegant contrast to the heavily ornamented silverwork surrounding the upper section. The silver decoration is particularly striking, incorporating repoussé and embossed fruit and foliage motifs, including apples, pomegranate-style seed pods and elaborate scrolling ornament. The central decoration includes a wonderfully detailed Green Man / Bacchus-style mask, while the hinged silver lid is surmounted by an attractive figural finial. The substantial silver handle and spout are also elaborately decorated, giving the jug an exceptional sculptural quality and making it a particularly impressive example of antique Victorian/Edwardian tableware. The quality of the engraved glass is consistent with the fine glassmaking tradition of the Stourbridge area, although the precise glassmaker has not been established. The piece has excellent decorative presence and would make an outstanding addition to a collection of antique silver, engraved glass, Victorian tableware or historic claret jugs. Condition Very good antique condition, commensurate with age. The glass is clean and clear internally and externally, with no chips or cracks noted. The silver mounts remain particularly impressive, with the embossed and repoussé decoration retaining excellent definition. The hallmarks are clear and easily readable. There is the expected minor age-related wear associated with an antique piece of this age, but overall the jug presents extremely well.
