This … Read more A striking vintage Murano hand-blown art glass centrepiece vase, dating to approximately c.1970 and originating from Murano, Venice, Italy. This substantial and highly decorative vase is an excellent example of mid-20th-century Italian art glass. Standing approximately 10 inches tall and weighing 3.1 kg, it has an impressive, weighty presence and an unusual broad, softly squared form rising to an organically shaped asymmetric rim. The vase features a vivid turquoise/cobalt-blue ground, surrounded by sweeping bands of colour and intricate Millefiori/Murrine cane decoration. The small floral-like cross-sections of coloured glass canes create a distinctive band around the body, with contrasting tones of red, yellow, cobalt blue, black and white suspended within the glass. The layered colouring is characteristic of the Incamiciata/cased-glass technique, in which contrasting layers of glass are fused together to create depth and movement. The rim is finished with a striking red cased-glass edge, complementing the colours throughout the body. Fine bubbles and subtle variations within the glass are consistent with traditional hand-blown production and add to the individuality of the piece. The softly undulating rim gives the vase a sculptural quality, while its substantial weight and unusual shape make it particularly effective as a standalone centrepiece. A similar vase is also available separately, offering the opportunity to create a highly decorative matching or complementary pair. Please see my other listing.
