A fine pair of late Victorian sterling silver trinket or bon bon dishes by the celebrated London silversmith William Comyns & Sons Ltd, fully hallmarked for London 1891. Richly decorated and beautifully matched, the pair exemplifies the elaborate pierced silverwork for which the Comyns workshop became particularly renowned. ㅤ Each dish is formed with an elegant serpentine outline bordered by traditional gadrooning, creating a rhythmic and highly decorative silhouette. The surfaces are enriched with finely worked foliate, floral and ribbon-swag motifs characteristic of sophisticated late Victorian silver. ㅤ The galleries are particularly impressive, finely hand chased with scrolling ornament and intricately pierced with symmetrical fretwork. The openwork construction creates an attractive interplay of light and shadow while giving the dishes a delicate appearance despite their solid silver construction. ㅤ Further scrolling and foliate ornament continues around the adjoining galleries, ensuring that the decorative treatment can be appreciated from every angle. Each dish is raised upon four elegant openwork feet, providing an elevated profile and adding further sculptural interest. ㅤ
Produced by William Comyns & Sons Ltd in 1891, the pair demonstrates the firm's accomplished combination of piercing, chasing and traditional ornamental silverwork during the height of the late Victorian period. ㅤ Both dishes remain in very good antique condition, with only minor surface marks consistent with age. They are free from damage, losses, splits, bruising or repairs and retain clean surfaces without later presentation inscriptions or monograms. ㅤ with a combined sterling silver weight of 181.1 grams, this beautifully preserved pair would make an elegant addition to a collection of Victorian silver or could be used as trinket, bon bon or confectionery dishes.
