The bookcase incorporates four open shelves to the front, providing generous and easily accessible storage despite its remarkably narrow footprint. The graduated shelf heights accommodate books of varying sizes while also making the piece particularly suitable for displaying ceramics, collectibles and decorative objects. The upper section is particularly attractive, featuring decorative detailing complemented by elegant bobbin-turned elements. These turned details introduce a strong sense of period character and craftsmanship while giving the otherwise practical form a more decorative architectural presence. The oak displays pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout, enhanced by a rich, warm colour and established patina. The subtle variations in tone give the timber considerable depth and reinforce the authentic character of the piece. One of the most desirable aspects of this bookcase is its exceptionally shallow depth. Measuring just 19.5 cm deep and 60 cm wide, it provides useful vertical storage while occupying remarkably little floor space, making it particularly suitable for smaller rooms, narrow hallways or areas where a conventional bookcase would be impractical. At 118 cm high, the proportions also allow the upper surface to remain accessible for displaying a lamp, sculpture, vase or other decorative object. Very well constructed and presented in good antique condition, with light age-related wear and signs of historic use consistent with its early 20th-century origin and adding to its authentic character. A particularly versatile and attractive piece of English oak furniture, ideally suited to a library, study, drawing room, hallway, bedroom or sophisticated country-house interior.
