A magnificent and exceptionally rare late victorian whitefriars james powell & sons statement vase, dating to circa 1880. Standing approximately 14.5 inches tall and weighing an impressive 2.4kg, this substantial piece is a superb example of early english art glass and would make an outstanding centrepiece for a serious collection.
the vase is beautifully formed in the distinctive sea-green glass associated with victorian whitefriars production. It features an elegant footed form with a substantial short stem, a wide, gently flared body and pronounced vertical optic ribbing which creates wonderful movement through the glass. The substantial proportions and highly sculptural form give it a particularly impressive presence. The underside retains a magnificent polished pontil mark, providing further evidence of its traditional hand-made manufacture. The vase is entirely characteristic of the hand-crafted approach for which james powell & sons was renowned, with glassmaking at whitefriars continuing to rely heavily on skilled craftsmen rather than mechanised production. The quality of the glass is particularly attractive, with the sea-green colour becoming beautifully translucent towards the thinner areas of the vessel. The optic ribbing catches and reflects the light, making this an exceptionally decorative piece when displayed either empty or with flowers. There is also an outstanding, long-lasting musical ring when the upper rim is gently tapped with a fingernail. Please see the accompanying video. This is an extremely difficult vase to find. I have been unable to locate another example of this particular form and size in my searches, although i have included photographs of comparable whitefriars pieces at the end of the listing for reference. A wonderful acquisition for a collector of whitefriars, james powell & sons, victorian art glass or early british arts and crafts glass. It would also make an exceptional statement vase or lily vase, if you can bear to use such a rare piece!

excellent antique condition. There are no chips, cracks or other significant damage. The base shows some light shelf wear consistent with its considerable age. Overall, an exceptionally well-preserved example for a vase of approximately 140 years old. Please examine all photographs carefully.
