An exceptional 19th-century English Victorian writing table, beautifully crafted in carved oak and distinguished by its elaborate decoration, striking limed finish and contrasting green leather writing surface. Exceptionally well made and of fine quality, the table is extensively decorated with highly detailed carving, demonstrating the craftsmanship and decorative ambition associated with accomplished Victorian furniture. The front incorporates two useful drawers, providing practical storage for writing implements, documents and personal items while maintaining the balanced proportions of the design. A handsome green leather writing surface provides an elegant and practical workspace, creating a particularly attractive contrast against the pale tones of the limed oak. The table stands on impressive barley-twist legs, united by decorative stretchers that provide both structural support and considerable visual interest. The combination of intricate carving, twisted supports and substantial construction gives the table a particularly distinctive architectural presence. The limed oak finish accentuates the natural grain and carved detailing of the timber, producing a wonderfully decorative pale appearance. Its soft white tones contrast beautifully with the rich green writing surface and allow the depth of the carving to remain particularly visible.
At 122 cm wide and 61 cm deep, the table offers a generous working surface while retaining elegant proportions, with a comfortable knee height of 64 cm. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 19th-century origin. A highly distinctive Victorian writing table combining elaborate carved oak, a decorative limed finish, green leather writing surface, practical twin drawers and impressive barley-twist supports—a striking statement piece for a study, library, living room or sophisticated home office.
