This impressive piece combines beautifully cut glass with elaborate silver-plated and gilded bronze grapevine mounts, creating a striking art nouveau-inspired design. The silverware is marked “ds over s” within a shield, identifying david shaw silverware ltd. The piece is also marked a1, indicating a superior quality of silver plating. The design is exceptionally ornate. The naturalistic handle is formed to resemble an intertwined grapevine branch, complete with leaves and tendrils, while the vine continues around the neck and body of the jug. Clusters of grapes and foliage provide an elaborate decorative network around the upper section. The bulbous glass body is beautifully cut with cross-cut diamond decoration, culminating in an attractive star-cut base. The clarity and sparkle of the glass provide a wonderful contrast to the elaborate metallic mounts. The hinged pouring mechanism is particularly impressive. The lid is surmounted by a finely modelled bunch of grapes resting upon leaves, forming a superb fruiting-vine finial. The finial can be unscrewed from beneath the lid, allowing it to be removed for cleaning. The combination of gilded and silver-plated grapevine decoration, pierced metalwork and deeply cut glass gives this jug considerable visual impact. It is an exceptional decorative piece for collectors of antique-style silverware, fine glass, wine accessories and art nouveau-inspired design. A wonderful centrepiece for a dining table, drinks cabinet or bar, and an especially attractive piece for the connoisseur of fine wines and decorative glass. Measurements: height: 10.5 inches width: 6 inches weight: approximately 1.6 kg markings: david shaw silverware ltd, london “ds over s” within a shield a1 / superior plating quality condition: excellent overall condition. The hinged pouring lid is in perfect working order and the silver plating remains bright and exceptionally well preserved, with no significant rubbing or dents noted. The glass has a couple of small nibbles to the cut decoration, but there are no cracks or signs of restoration. The exterior would benefit from a gentle clean, while the interior is clean and clear. Overall, the jug appears to have seen very little use. No original box included. A particularly impressive example of david shaw silverware, combining ornate grapevine metalwork with high-quality cut glass in a spectacular presentation piece. See less
