Known collectively as Music, the pair depicts two idealised classical Greek musicians, one playing cymbals and the other a stringed instrument. The figures are beautifully modelled in graceful poses, their flowing classical drapery arranged in sweeping folds that create a convincing sense of movement and rhythm. Delicate colouring and the distinctive Royal Worcester “Shot Enamels” decoration give the surfaces subtle tonal variation and a refined, almost luminous quality. Each musician stands barefoot upon a naturalistically modelled rocky base. The combination of classical subject matter, elegant proportions and finely observed detail demonstrates the sculptural sophistication for which Hadley's designs for Royal Worcester became renowned. The figures bear Royal Worcester factory marks, the designation “Shot Enamels”, and model numbers 1827 and 1828, together with date codes corresponding to 1911. The models are associated with James Hadley, one of the factory's most important and collectable designers. Retaining the complementary pair is particularly desirable, creating an elegant and balanced display suitable for a collection of fine English porcelain or as decorative objects within a refined interior.
