A handsome mid-Victorian English terrestrial table telescope by the noted Manchester scientific instrument maker John Benjamin Dancer, dating to circa 1850–1860. The telescope features a finely turned dark hardwood barrel complemented by four extending brass draw tubes, creating an attractive contrast between the richly toned timber and aged brass. Fully assembled, the telescope extends to approximately 111 cm, giving it an impressive presence both as a functional optical instrument and as a decorative collector's piece. The instrument is engraved “Dancer Manchester” and is accompanied by its folding brass tripod stand and fitted mahogany carrying case, designed to accommodate the telescope and its components when dismantled.
John Benjamin Dancer (1812–1887) was an important Victorian scientific instrument maker working in Manchester and is particularly recognised for his contributions to microscopy and his pioneering work in microphotography. His firm produced a variety of precision optical and scientific instruments during the 19th century. Originally intended for terrestrial observation, telescopes of this type were suitable for viewing landscapes, shipping and distant architecture. The combination of brass, hardwood and fitted mahogany case makes this an especially attractive example of Victorian scientific craftsmanship. Presented in good antique condition, displaying surface wear, patination and marks consistent with age and use. There is a visible scratch to the lens, as shown in the photographs.
