The piece dates from the interwar period and is British in origin. Crafted in sterling silver and enriched with a gilt finish, the medallion combines traditional British silversmithing with the elaborate ceremonial character associated with fraternal presentation pieces of the early 20th century. The warm gilded surface gives the piece the visual richness of gold while retaining sterling silver as its underlying precious metal. Finely worked symbolic detailing gives the medallion considerable visual interest and reflects its original ceremonial and commemorative purpose. Presentation medallions of this type were traditionally awarded to recognise membership, office, service or achievement within fraternal organisations. This example provides an appealing connection with British social and ceremonial history during the 1930s. The Chester 1933 hallmark adds particular collecting interest, while the compact proportions make the piece well suited to display alongside antique silver, medals, ceremonial objects and other examples of British decorative arts.
