The box features a gently domed lid and subtly sloping sides, a traditional form associated with portable document, jewellery and valuables boxes produced by skilled Indian craftsmen during the 19th century. Its compact proportions and robust construction would have made it particularly suitable for protecting personal possessions while travelling. Crafted from richly grained solid teak, the exterior has developed a deep, warm patina through generations of handling and use. The timber is complemented by hand-worked metal fittings, including decorative brass mounts, an original-style brass lock plate and clasp, iron hinges and a substantial carrying handle mounted to the lid. The interior retains a small partition, suggesting that the box was originally intended to organise jewellery, coins, documents or other personal valuables. Age-related marks, surface wear and variations in the timber contribute to its authentic antique character and attractive appearance. A handsome example of traditional South Indian craftsmanship, combining the durability of teak with understated decorative metalwork. Equally appealing as a collectable piece of Indian decorative art or as an unusual storage box within a contemporary or traditional interior.
