Standing an impressive 226 cm high, the bookcase has considerable presence while its relatively narrow 110.5 cm width allows it to provide substantial display and storage capacity without requiring the footprint of a wider library bookcase. The upper section features a glazed cabinet opening to reveal two internal shelves. A striking red-lined interior provides a dramatic contrast against the richly coloured oak and creates an especially effective backdrop for displaying books, ceramics, collectibles or objets d'art. The exterior is extensively decorated with finely executed carving, with particularly elaborate work to the upper section. The depth and intricacy of the decoration demonstrate considerable craftsmanship and give the bookcase a strong architectural character. Below the glazed cabinet is a useful central drawer, itself enhanced with detailed carving and providing convenient storage for smaller items. The substantial lower section incorporates a blind-door cupboard containing an internal shelf, offering generous concealed storage and creating a practical counterpoint to the glazed display area above. The bookcase retains its key, preserving an attractive and functional period feature. Raised upon sturdy square-section legs, the piece has a strong and beautifully balanced stance appropriate to its substantial proportions. Particularly appealing is the oak itself, displaying pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Rich, warm colour and a mature patina developed through generations of age and use give the timber considerable depth and authentic Victorian character, naturally accentuating the intricately carved surfaces. Very well constructed and presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 19th-century Victorian origin. For easier transportation and installation, the bookcase separates into two principal sections. A rare and highly decorative example of Victorian carved oak furniture, combining protected display space, drawer storage and a substantial lower cupboard within an exceptionally impressive architectural form. Ideally suited to a library, study, drawing room or sophisticated country-house interior.
