A handsome george v sterling silver and lead crystal inkwell or desk paperweight by james dixon & sons, fully hallmarked in sheffield for 1920. Combining substantial cut crystal with an engine-turned sterling silver mount, the piece displays the clean geometric character associated with the emerging art deco period. ㅤ the inkwell is formed from a substantial block of fine lead crystal, cut into a strong architectural form with a broad square base. The considerable weight of the glass allows the piece to function equally well as a practical inkwell or decorative desk paperweight. ㅤ the upper section is fitted with a circular sterling silver mount and hinged flip-top cover. The lid is finely decorated with precise engine turning, creating a sophisticated geometric surface that catches the light while maintaining the restrained character of the overall design. ㅤ the hinged cover remains in good working order, opening smoothly to reveal the interior of the inkwell. The contrast between the highly polished silver and substantial transparent crystal gives the piece considerable visual appeal. ㅤ produced by james dixon & sons, one of sheffield's established manufacturers of silver and luxury tableware, the piece carries sheffield hallmarks dating it precisely to 1920 during the reign of george v. ㅤ with a substantial gross weight of 434.1 grams, the inkwell has an impressive solidity despite its compact proportions, making it particularly effective as a functional desk accessory. ㅤ the sterling silver remains free from damage or repairs, displaying only minor surface marks consistent with age. The crystal has a couple of small chips, but the piece remains overall in very good antique condition and is clean and ready for use or display. ㅤ a refined example of early 20th-century british deskware combining sterling silver, substantial cut crystal and elegant engine-turned decoration.
