The piece is an original British example dating to the first half of the 19th century. The adjustable book slide displays the meticulous decorative craftsmanship for which Tunbridge Ware became celebrated during the Victorian period. Numerous small sections of differently coloured woods are carefully arranged to create intricate geometric and pictorial patterns, producing a richly detailed surface without the use of paint. The hinged end panels rise vertically to support books when in use, while the extending construction allows the length to be adjusted according to the number of volumes being displayed. When not required, the ends can be folded down, demonstrating the combination of decorative artistry and practical ingenuity characteristic of quality 19th-century desk accessories. Tunbridge Ware developed principally around Tunbridge Wells and became particularly fashionable during the 19th century, with finely inlaid boxes, writing accessories, book stands and other decorative objects becoming desirable souvenirs and luxury household pieces. Dating to circa 1840, this example has considerable appeal as both a functional antique and an example of early Victorian English decorative woodwork.
