Executed in the romantic Rococo Revival manner, the composition draws inspiration from the fêtes galantes and amorous garden scenes associated with 18th-century French masters such as Jean-Honoré Fragonard. The painting depicts an intimate encounter between an elegantly dressed young couple embracing within an idyllic garden. Their theatrical pose forms the focal point of the composition, surrounded by playful winged putti who observe and encourage the lovers from clouds, architectural features and surrounding foliage. One cherub prominently holds a tablet inscribed “The Sermon of Love,” reinforcing the allegorical and romantic nature of the scene. Rich vegetation, flowering plants, classical statuary and architectural fragments create a dreamlike setting around the figures. The artist employs a warm and luminous palette of greens, golds, creams and soft pastel tones, while the flowing garments and animated gestures bring movement and theatricality to the composition. The work reflects the renewed European fascination with 18th-century Rococo imagery during the late 19th century, when romantic subjects, pastoral settings and playful allegories of love once again became fashionable decorative themes. The painting is indistinctly signed, inscribed “Roma” and dated 1886, giving the work a firm connection to the Italian artistic milieu of the period. It is presented within a substantial ebonised black frame with a narrow gilt inner slip, providing a striking contrast to the luminous colours of the composition. An evocative and highly decorative example of Italian Rococo Revival painting, particularly suited to collections of 19th-century European art, romantic figurative painting and Grand Tour interiors.
