A striking early 20th-century norwegian sterling silver vase by the celebrated silversmith marius hammer / thune tradition, distinguished by its evocative viking maritime decoration and colourful enamel work. The vase is beautifully fashioned with a continuous scene depicting four viking longboats at sea, their distinctive silhouettes creating a dramatic composition around the body. Various coloured enamels bring the maritime scene to life and provide a rich contrast against the polished silver ground. The subject reflects the strong viking revival and norse historical influences found throughout scandinavian decorative arts during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The combination of traditional imagery, precious metal and enamel makes the piece particularly appealing as an example of norwegian decorative silver.
the vase is stamped “925 s”, denoting sterling standard silver, together with the thune maker’s mark. With a gross weight of approximately 80 grams, the vase retains an elegant yet substantial feel. Presented in good original condition overall. There are some minor surface marks to the enamel consistent with age and use, as visible in the photographs, while the silver itself has no noted damage. The vase remains watertight and is clean and ready for use or display. A particularly decorative piece of early 20th-century scandinavian silver, combining norwegian craftsmanship, colourful enamelling and an iconic viking maritime subject.
