The composition portrays Charity standing gracefully while cradling an infant in her arms, accompanied by two young children at her side. One presents flowers while the other reaches affectionately toward the central figure, creating a tender and beautifully balanced representation of maternal care, generosity and compassion. Finely modelled in pearlware, the figure is decorated in a delicate palette of soft pink, blue and rose tones. The translucent glaze enhances the subtle colouring of the flowing drapery, while carefully rendered facial features, hands and bare feet demonstrate the attention given to the sculptural details. The group stands upon a traditional oval base, providing stability while complementing the vertical composition of the figures. Allegorical representations of Charity were popular subjects among English ceramic manufacturers during the late 18th and 19th centuries, reflecting the contemporary taste for figures embodying moral virtues and classical themes. Presented in good antique condition, with minor edge and surface wear consistent with age. A particularly appealing example of English pearlware, combining delicate colouring, sentimental subject matter and accomplished modelling. An attractive addition to a collection of early English ceramics, Staffordshire figures or 19th-century decorative arts. See less
