Produced by the renowned Coalbrookdale Company, one of the most important names in 19th-century English decorative ironwork, the bench features an extraordinarily elaborate cast-iron framework inspired by Gothic architecture and ornament. The high pierced back is particularly impressive, centred by an elaborate circular Gothic motif and surrounded by intricate tracery, scrolling foliage, quatrefoil-inspired ornament and repeating pointed forms. The decoration continues through the sweeping arms and supports, creating an exceptionally sculptural piece when viewed from any angle. The cast iron retains layers of historic green and pale painted finish with extensive natural weathering, losses and oxidation. This wonderfully aged surface gives the bench enormous character and could either be preserved in its present state or restored according to the preference of its next owner. The seat is formed from substantial timber slats, providing an attractive contrast against the highly decorative ironwork. At 127 cm wide and 102 cm high, the bench has excellent presence without being excessively large, making it particularly suitable for a country-house garden, conservatory, terrace, orangery or architectural interior. A highly collectible example of Victorian Gothic Revival garden furniture and an increasingly desirable piece of British decorative ironwork.
