Finely carved from translucent green jadeite, the sculpture displays beautiful natural variations in colour and tone, giving the composition exceptional visual depth and character. The translucency of the stone allows light to penetrate portions of the carving, highlighting the rich green hues and intricate sculptural details. Guanyin is portrayed in an elegant standing pose with flowing robes and holding a sacred attribute. Beneath her is a finely detailed dragon, an important symbol within Chinese culture traditionally associated with strength, wisdom, power and protection. A young attendant seated alongside Guanyin adds narrative interest and creates an attractive balance within the composition. Particular attention has been given to the serene facial features, folds of the robes, individually rendered dragon scales and naturalistically carved rocky formations. The complexity of the composition demonstrates considerable skill on the part of the carver, successfully combining multiple figures and symbolic elements while retaining an elegant overall silhouette. Presented in good decorative condition with minor age-related wear consistent with careful display. A striking example of Chinese decorative carving combining Buddhist iconography, traditional symbolism and the natural beauty of translucent green jadeite. An impressive addition to a collection of Chinese works of art, Buddhist sculpture or Asian decorative objects. See less
