The figure is beautifully observed, with the artisan portrayed in a moment of quiet concentration surrounded by the vessels and implements of his trade. His bearded face and wrapped turban are carefully modelled, while the relaxed seated posture gives the sculpture an engaging naturalism. Particularly attractive is the subtle ivory-toned porcelain enriched with delicate hand-painted decoration. Small floral motifs embellish the sitter's tunic, complemented by restrained touches of colour and gilt detailing that accentuate the folds of his clothing and surrounding objects. The modelling reflects the tradition of Royal Worcester's celebrated Orientalist and ethnographic figures, which portrayed subjects from different cultures and occupations with considerable attention to costume and character. The figure has been associated with the tradition of James Hadley, one of Royal Worcester's most important modellers, although attribution should depend upon the marks or model number present on the underside. A charming and highly decorative example of English art porcelain, particularly appealing to collectors of Royal Worcester, Victorian and Edwardian ceramics, and figurative porcelain.
