The piece is centred by a substantial body of solid mottled green marble, its rich natural colouring providing a striking contrast against the warm gilded ormolu mounts. The hinged flip-top cover and surrounding mounts are beautifully decorated in relief with flower-head swags, scrolling ornament, pineapple finials and stylised classical motifs. The elaborate detailing gives the piece a particularly sculptural and architectural quality. Raised upon four naturalistically modelled claw feet, the inkwell has an imposing and well-balanced profile characteristic of fine French decorative objects of the period. Presented in good antique condition with only minor age-related surface marks. There are no noted chips, damage, bruises or repairs. An impressive example of 19th-century French desk furniture, suitable for use as an inkwell, decorative standish or statement paperweight.
